Das Unheimliche
The task was to manage a way to represent the meaning of this term for the Essence exhibition.
The Unheimliche feeling arises when something from the outside disturbs the situation that we are familiar with (to feel "as at home") so we start to feel anxious. I wanted to simulate this principle of developing of the Unheimliche feeling, barring in mind it should all occur in gallery space. But, what is "as at home" in the gallery space today when everything is possible inside?
I wanted to stay in domain of natural, concrete sounds that disturb us on the human level, regardless of the fact they are maybe a piece of art. I needed a sound that make us feel helpless as we are not able to define its origin. That is why I didn't want to make ordinary sound installation with computer but this electromechanical object - knocking machine.
Machine was hooked on the outside part of the door in the gallery space so nobody inside could see it.
It knocks every five minutes in intervals like this ''' ''''' ''' ''.
